Version 6.3: Three Key Updates for Scorekeepers on Android

Our previous release included features for coaches and fans. Version 6.3 of the GameChanger Android app is all about the scorekeepers. Here are the 3 key updates for scorekeepers:

  1. Short Fielders, Rovers, and 10th Outfielder: Softball scorekeepers, rejoice! Choose either Rover or Short-Fielder from the game “Settings” view.
  2. Pitching Decisions: Coaches and scorekeepers can now set pitching decisions directly from the app
  3. Pre-Set Lineups: Create pre-set lineups based on your opponent.

Short Fielders, Rovers, and 10th Outfielder

In slow pitch softball there are often 10 players on the field instead of the traditional 9. The 10th player is that short fielder, sometimes called a “rover”, who plays in the outfield, usually at a shallow depth between the outfielders and infield.

Most teams will shift the short fielder from right to left, depending on the batter. Generally speaking, right handed batters hit more balls to the left side of the field, so the short fielder moves more to that side, and vice versa for left handed batters.

Whatever your strategy, you can now properly score a game with 10 outfielders from the GameChanger Android app!

Here’s How:

  1. Start or enter a game on your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Android device.
  2. Open the Game Menu.
  3. Select the option labeled, Settings.
  4. At the bottom select Rover or L/R Center under Short Fielder/Extra Outfielder.

This will create an extra player to appear as SF on the scoring screen. Rover will create a player right behind second base, while L/R Center will create another player in the outfield.

Pitching Decisions

Finalize@2x

When Finalizing a Game on GameChanger Android, Scorekeepers will be prompted to record the various pitching decisions resulting from the game. You will be given the option to select the winning pitcher, the losing pitcher, and select saves and blown saves for each team.

Pitching decisions may also be assigned or edited through the post-game box score on your GC.com team page.

Pre-Set Lineups

pre-set lineup

Coaches and scorekeepers can create and save multiple lineups for their team. Many coaches create pre-set lineups based on the matchup. Playing against a lefty pitcher? Playing a team with a bunch of contact hitters? You can now create your ideal lineup before the game, and easily access it before the game.

Here’s How:

  1. Open the GameChanger app, and tap “Lineup” in the navigation bar at the top of your team page.
  2. Tap the orange “+” icon in the bottom right corner of the screen to add a pre-set lineup
  3. Select the players you wish to add to your pre-set lineup
  4. Scroll down to the bottom and tap “DONE”
  5. From the Lineup tab, select which lineup you want to “Activate”

That’s it for now, but there are more updates coming soon.

Is there a way to score a forfeit?

    • HI Brian,

We do not yet offer a tool that will specify that a game has been decided by a forfeit. However, the easiest workaround to communicate such a result would be to Edit the Game Details of the game in which one team forfeited.

You may then edit the game score to reflect a 1-0 win for one of the teams.

You may also go one step further and open the game on your scoring device and use the Message Fans tool to insert a “Forfeit” line of text in the game’s play-by-play.

Is there a way to adjust plays after or during the game using Android App?

    • Hi Sharlene,
You cannot currently edit “plays” on the app, yet. You can tap the “undo” button if you need to jump back a pitch or two, but you don’t have the ability to jump back to point several innings prior and change a scoring decision in the app. That’s coming soon.

However, if you need to change a stat in the box score, you can do so after the game from your GC.com team page. Here’s how:

      1) Log into your GC.com account and open the game you wish to edit.
      2) Click “Edit” above the hitting or pitching stat sections for your team.
      3) Begin editing the stats, or use the up and down arrows to add or remove players to the lineup.
      4) Save.

Let us know if you have any difficulty or additional feedback.

Having trouble in scoring a bad pickoff throw by the pitcher that results in the runner advancing a base. It should be scored a throwing error by the pitcher but the only option that comes close is fielding error but that’s not really an accurate account of the play. Is there a way to score throwing errors on pickoffs?

    • Sean

Hi Justin – Thanks for writing in. I just tried to do this myself, and the “throwing error” option appears after you drag the runner to second when the count is 0-0, but it doesn’t when the isn’t 0-0.

I’ve passed this bug along to our development team. In the meantime, we suggest scoring it a “fielding error” and it will appear correctly in the players “Fielding Stats”. If you would like to add additional detail so the fans can get an accurate description of the play, we suggest that you add a “Note” to the play. You can do this from the “Plays” tab in the app.

  • Dustin Zachary

How do you preview what an opposing batter did during their last at bat? Would be good to know how to pitch to them.

    • HI Dustin – Currently, you can only see how the batter did by viewing the player’s stats in the box score or scrolling down to their previous at bat in the “Plays” tab.

We’re currently working to consolidate this info and make it easier to access, so you can start taking advantage of the info during the game. Thanks for your patience. Stay tuned for future update!

At times, to make up a double header, our league will play one 9 inning game that will count as either 2 wins or 2 losses. Is there a way to adjust the win / loss figure to reflect this?

    • Hmm. Never heard of this type of scenario. We don’t have an option to make one win or one loss count as two on the record. But the best way to accommodate for this is to reschedule the game that got postponed to the date of the other game. Score one game as you would normally, and manually edit the box score of the second game to 1-0 or 0-1 depending on the result of the actual game.

This will certainly impact your runs for or runs against number at the end of the season, but your record will he correctly displayed.

We have some family members set up in the Community with hotmail accounts that say they are not receiving announcements, while those with gmail accounts are receiving them. Any idea why?

  • Brian

It would be nice to see pitch count on Andriod during an inning..just like you can on Apple.

    • HI Brian – Thanks for writing in. Do you mind clarifying your question? You can currently access the pitch counts during the inning below the pitchers name.

To access additional info about the pitch counts:

      1. Tap the pitcher’s name at the top of the scoring screen;
      2. Tap View Pitch Counts.

From here you can see the pitch counts for every pitch who has appeared in the game so far.

      • Brian

I can see the total pitch counts after the inning..but if you have a pitcher in the second inning I can’t seem to see how many pitches they have during that inning.

        • I see!

Thanks for pointing that out. We’re continuing to work towards feature parity with both iOS and Android, so this is on our roadmap. Unfortunately I can’t give you an ETA on it’s release.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention. I’ve passed your feedback along to our product teams.

  • Melinda

Is there a way for our press box to keep stats for all teams in our tournament using the Game Changer app?

    • Hi Melinda – There is, but it’s rather complex to setup, so we may need help you . Can you email our support team at help@gc.com, and they’ll be able to walk you through the best way to set up your tournament on GameChanger.

Thanks for writing in! Have a great summer.
